One of the things I love best about Berlin is that it feels like a wildly varied collection of smaller cities bound together as one sprawling metropolis. And it's just this small-town-gone-big-city feel that makes this makes this city endless explorable. Get on the U8 in hipster-parent-central PrenzlBerg and in 20 minutes you could be losing yourself in a bursting-with-color Turkish market in Kreuzberg that you'd swear was transplanted straight from Istanbul. The East/West divide is nothing like used to be, but the lavish shopping corridor along the Ku'damm is still a far cry from the wacky thrift stores and graffiti-sprayed facades of Friedrichshain. Then there's multi-kulti Neukölln, up-and-coming Wedding, and the skinny side streets of Mitte's former Jewish quarter, which are some of the prettiest and best-preserved in the city despite their tragic past. I've never seen a city quite like this one, and I love trying to capture just a smidge of the flavor of each Kiez as I get to know it through the lens of my camera.
Because this project is an ongoing hobby, the fruits of my neighborhood exploration will show up as time goes on. For now, check out the pull-down menu for the firstfruits of Kreuzberg's Gräfekiez, Prenzlauer Berg's Kollwitzkiez and Mitte's Rosenthalerkiez.
[Disclaimer: Some areas of the city that feel like coherent entities to me don't have official names, so in true call-it-how-you-see-it Berlin fashion, I have taken the liberty of naming those myself. Refer to them in public by those names at your own risk.]
